All About The RJ In RJ45By Anna Stenning In one of those days where you learn about something new that you really did not care about before (possibly because it had no real relevance in your life) crops up, your mind boggles as to why you did not pay attention to it before! The RJ45 cable is one of those very things that one will unfortunately come across and learn about if they ever want their computer to do more than hold vital information or run your favourite role playing game. For those who are wondering what an RJ45 could possibly do with them and why this is relevant to them, the truth is that it is very relevant to our everyday life. The RJ is an acronym for registered jack, which is simply a type of connector. You may be familiar with one if you take a look at how your telephone line is connected to the jack. The wire that connects from your telephone handset to the jack is connected with a funny flat rectangular connector that appears to have pins on it - this is a registered jack. It comes as no surprise then that these little beauties are extremely important for communication and networking. Its usages are numerous and can be applied in various communicative devices. Of the varying RJ series are of course the 45 mentioned earlier, the RJ11, RJ14, RJ25 and RJ21X. Some are more common than the other with the rj45 being the most used cable in the UK. These connectors are now mostly used as Ethernet cables, which is the cable used for networking computers together so they can communicate with one another. The RJ45 is the most commonly used Ethernet connector and is also widely used in the US. This differs from a traditional telephone registered jack because a normal RJ cable does not contain as many pins as an Ethernet cable. The standard Ethernet connector can contain eight pins, for stronger communication and networking between computers. For this reason the rj45 can be mistaken for an 8P8C cable (as if the acronyms could not become more confusing!). The 8P8C plug literally means an eight position eight contact plug and is often used for the standard communication connection of devices. Also available is the 6P6C plug, which by its name gives away that it has 6 positions of six contacts. The rj45 differs because of its power efficiency and size. The amount of information shared between devices proves its worth as a vital piece of communicative tool. Furthermore, it has its own unique individual connection in that the connection between each machine may differ. The rj 45 will have a female and male connector, so as to determine the kind of connection made. All of these acronyms and labels have a purpose, in that it helps people decipher which connector to use for networking the machines. Simple enough, but you may be thinking 'how is this important to me?' Well the answer is simply this; in a working office environment this plays a very important role in keeping the computers transferring vital information to each other in little time. This also helps keep computers linked together in a home environment too, allowing communication to other devices and sending more information.
