Affordable Engagement Ring Buying Tips

By Jerry Glynn

Take a deep breath, single men of the world: the average engagement ring costs over three thousand dollars, according to the latest statistics. Before you start to panic, however, you should know that with a few simple tips, you can keep the sticker price of the bauble you give your bride to be well under this hefty sum.

What to do first. Consider which characteristics of an engagement ring are most important to her, and to you. Some people place the most importance on the diamond, a single solitary diamond, and if you are one of these people, than you will want to focus the majority of your budget on a high quality diamond without high quality metals, elaborate designs, or expensive accent stones. If the design of the ring is most important however, then less expensive stones make sense, so that you can spend most of your budget on an arrangement of many gems and intricate metal designs.

In general, couples should decide which features of the engagement ring as a whole are the most important to them, or, if you are planning to surprise her with a ring when you pop the all important question, which features are most important to you, and which features you believe are most important to her. Ring metals are generally gold, platinum, and titanium, with many multi metal combinations in between. Diamonds, semi precious gems, and pearls are the most common types of stones, and with these, there are shape and quality grades to consider.

So how do you purchase a ring that will not break the bank. Choose a lower value metal, because lets face it, 14k gold and 18k gold are virtually identical to the untrained eye, and silver is much less expensive than white gold, while still retaining silvery white characteristics. Smaller carat gems can also help to drive the price down, and again, while there is very little visual difference between sizes, there is a significant price difference between them.

What else. Choose a thinner band, which will also help to emphasize the stones as well, and choosing synthetic stones instead of real ones for the accent stones. You can also choose smaller gems overall, and more common stone shapes, ie round. The good news is that you can still purchase a stunning engagement ring by following these tips, and even better, you may have a little money left to pay the rent as well.
