Your Basic Tips for Cleaning Diamonds

By Lawrence J. Reaves

Diamonds are the toughest substance known to mankind. However, they are precious gems and should be handled as such. Since the significance of giving a diamond has never waivered, the recipient will need to care for the diamond(s) for years to come to maintain their luster and beauty.

The following are tips and guidelines related to caring for and cleaning diamonds:

DO:
Clean diamonds with mild liquid detergent mixed with water.

Focus on less durable gemstones if they are in the same piece of jewelry as your diamond(s).

Remove your diamonds while cleaning. At the very least wear gloves.

Use a very soft brush to clean diamonds that have been soaked in a mild liquid detergent mixed with water. An infant toothbrush has the appropriate softness.

Use a wooden toothpick to carefully remove any troublesome grime or dirt buildup. It might be wise to soak the tip of the toothpick in the soapy water for a minute before using.

Use a lint free cloth to dry your diamonds and other gems.

Soak your diamond jewelry in a bowl, not a sink.

If you must use a sink CLOSE the drain before soaking your jewelry. Close the drain and lay a washcloth across the bottom of the sink, squirt in your mild detergent, then fill with warm water. Now place your jewelry in the sink.

Check under the setting(s) and underneath the diamonds for grime and dirt. If grime is built up on the bottom of diamonds, the light can not get through making the diamond appear milky or cloudy.

Treat your diamonds the same as you treat your nails after a fresh manicure.

Ask your jeweler for special tools and cleaners for each type of gem.

DO NOT:
Let chemicals touch your diamonds-this means harsh detergents, cleaning supplies, or bug sprays

Swim in chlorine while wearing your diamonds. It would probably be wise not to wear them while in fresh or salt water either-if they fall off they might be gone forever.

Clean your diamonds with toothpaste or ammonia, especially if they are set with other gemstones. You should focus on cleaning with a substance that won't scratch the less resistant gems.

Leave your jewelry on or near a sink or tub.

Use a plastic toothpick (or plastic anything for that matter) to clean your diamonds or jewelry.

Use paper or terry cloth towels to dry your jewelry after cleaning.

Let lotions, hairspray, gel, or harsh soaps get on your diamonds.

Wear your diamonds to the gym, working in the yard, washing and waxing your vehicle, or when you are moving and lifting heavy items.

Diamonds are forever, but they still need special attention on a regular basis. Be sure to have all of your jewelry checked by a jeweler once a year for cracks, chips and overall maintenance.
