Who Needs Prostate Support?

By Phoenix Delray

As men get older, the need for prostate support usually increases. It is estimated that 50% of men will experience prostate issues by age 60 and 90% by age 85. Because this percentage is so large, it is extremely important that men take extra precautions during their life so that they have a better chance of not having to deal with this disease.

The prostate gland sits just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, which is the tube in which urine flows from the bladder to the penis. As the prostate gland slowly enlarges with age, different prostatic conditions may occur.

The main recognized prostate conditions are Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH and prostatitis, which is an inflammation or infection of the prostate due to bacterial or non bacterial infection. Symptoms of prostate problems include hesitancy and difficulty in starting passing urine, feeling the need to urinate urgently and frequently, and nocturia (having to go to the bathroom frequently during the night). Other symptoms of an enlarged prostate include a weak or intermittent urine stream, and a feeling that your bladder is not completely emptied after urination. This is due to the enlarged prostate pressing against the urethra, a tube which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. Other symptoms may include pain in the back or lower abdominal area and in the groin, and there may sometimes also be blood present in semen and/or urine. Additionally a decrease in semen production could be attributed to an enlarged prostate. Anyone experiencing these conditions should seek the advice of a physician.

As the prostate enlarges, it can compress the urethra and partially or completely block urine flow. This can result in frequent urges to urinate, poor flow of urine, and incomplete voiding of the bladder, which can eventually lead to urine infections. Sexual function, depending on the severity of prostate issues, can be adversely affected leading to declined sexual performance.

Prostate support may include taking prescription drugs and/or natural supplementation with herbs such as saw palmetto, stinging nettle, zinc or with Pollexia a natural standardized extract shown to alleviate prostate issues. Some supplements are quite effective and help avoid the negative side effects associated with prescription drugs. Prostate massage may also be considered as part or proper prostate support.

It is important to consult a physician at the first signs of prostate enlargement. An enlarged prostate diagnosis, may require a rectal exam performed by a physician. Although uncomfortable, it is not painful procedure.
