College Dorms 101: Guide for Beginners

By Phoenix Delray

College dorms can help a students social life at school and also ease the transition from living at home to living on your own. Not only that, but living in a dorm will introduce you to a wide variety of people and diverse student groups. Most colleges require that students live in dorms for at least the first year of study, but even if it is not required, many experts believe that it is to a students benefit to do so.

There are a few drawbacks to living in a dorm, but most students agree that the benefits outweigh the hassles. Privacy can be hard to come by sometimes, the bathrooms can get a bit crowded when there are so many people sharing them, and the topic of roommates is a subject all its own. However, the majority of college students are very glad that they chose dorms over apartments as they initially adjusted to college life.

There are many different types of dorms across college campuses. Co ed general ones are the dorms with either girls on one side and guys on the other, or girls and guys on alternating floors, etc. Single sex dorms are those that are for women only or men only. There are some colleges that require first year students to live in this type of housing. Often, the single sex dorms have some type of restriction that concerns having guests of the opposite sex, whether it be only on certain days or only during certain hours.

Another type of housing for students on campus is the chemical free dorm. These dorms do not allow drugs, smoking, or drinking. If you dont use any of these substances, it may be a good idea living in this type of housing. The stereotypical keggers and roommates puking all over your stuff will probably be kept to non existent, and you will be able to concentrate on other aspects of college. Be warned, however, that the repercussions for violating rules in chemical free dorms can be pretty severe.

Theme dorms or special interest housing units are a popular choice for many first year college students. This type of college housing is for students who share similar interests, whether it is music or international students, business majors, or science enthusiasts. These dorms can help the first timer feel more comfortable by being surrounded by peers with similar hobbies and activities going on, but a drawback can also be that the diversity of people that the college student would be exposed to would be pretty limited.

Most rooms in college dorms are double occupancy rooms; some are singles, usually for the floor counselor, and some are almost like apartments, which are reserved most often for the RA, or resident advisor. As a first year student, dont get your hopes up of living in a single or RA room.
