The Benefits Of Working From HomeBy Shawn Wilson Now that I've been working from home for just under two years it's become very clear to me that although there are certainly challenges, they pale in comparison to the benefits of having a home based business. Flexibility. The number one benefit, hands down. I no longer need to beg time off work for medical appointments, getting a haircut, or having the oil changed in my car. Provided that these activities don't interfere with any deadlines, I'm free to schedule these when it's convenient for me. Even grocery shopping is made more pleasant when it can be done on a traditionally quiet Monday or Tuesday morning rather than Friday evening or Saturday morning when everyone in town seems to have run out of the basics. Commuting. No more commuting comes a very close second! The time that used to be wasted behind the wheel of my car, stuck in traffic can now be used to actually get some work done. These days the biggest slowdown in my morning commute from the bedroom to the kitchen is a detour around the laundry basket. The amount of money saved in gas, car repairs, and vehicle insurance is substantial. The reduced wear and tear on my vehicle and the fact that I'm putting far less mileage on it than previously will hopefully lengthen its lifespan. Increased family time. One of the nicest things about working from home is being there when the kids get home from school. I get to hear all about their day in far greater detail than before. When I worked full time outside of the home and didn't get home until 6 o'clock, my kids' day had moved on. Even though I would hear about the highlights, the little things were skipped. It's frequently those little things that they share with me that give me a greater insight into their lives. Branching out. When I was part of the 9-5 brigade, I was labeled as the 'office administrator'. Once I started working from home I was free to start exploring other options and increase my scope of work. It was simply easier to build on previous experiences since I'm in control. I'm free to take on additional work to strengthen my new skills and explore opportunities for more. I'm no longer boxed in by a corporate job description, I create my own and it's constantly changing. Less stress. All the benefits mentioned above have had a definite impact on my stress level. I no longer need to keep a watchful eye on the local weather channel to plan my winter driving. I don't have to worry who's going to take the kids to their extracurricular activities. I don't have to deal with uncooperative and unproductive coworkers, and best of all, I don't need to set my alarm. Returning to a 9-5 job holds no appeal for me. Here's hoping it won't be necessary any time soon! About the author This article was written by Shawn Wilson, a member of the customer support team at Datepad, where internet dating is always free.
