Brits Shown To Have Holiday AnxietiesBy Mark Dawson A holiday should be about taking time away from the stresses and strains of modern day living. Whether this is relaxing by the pool sipping cocktails, taking in some culture at a museum or a more active pursuit such as mountain biking, concerns of your day-to-day life back at home should be far from the mind. However, this rarely appears to be the case as a recently released piece of research by American Express shows that a significant number of Brits are unable to take their thoughts off domestic concerns while away on holiday. According to the financial services firm, some 70 per cent of people are plagued by some sort of worry during their break. Of such consumers, just over a quarter (26 per cent) state that they are concerned about increasing living costs back home. However, such anxieties appear to weigh especially heavily on the minds of 25 to 34-year-olds, as American Express revealed 35 per cent of these people are worried about price surges. Meanwhile, it may be possible that personal loan repayments, credit cards and utility bills are some of the other spending commitments that consumers are worrying about. The study also showed that more than one in four (28 per cent) women are also concerned about rising living costs, with this making a third of young people anxious. And while a holiday away offers the chance for Brits to get away from viewing the same four walls everyday, some consumers appear to be unable to take their thoughts off of their property. One out of three people questioned state that - with reports of a rise in domestic crime set to take place - they are concerned they will return to a burgled home. Commenting on the figures, Sarah Harrison, director at American Express Travellers Cheques, said: 'A holiday should be a time for rest and relaxation. However, as our research has shown, additional stresses and pressures of home are often difficult to leave behind. Thinking carefully about how you carry your money abroad is one way to give you peace of mind when abroad.' She went on to advise that as autumn sets in and winter is on its way, those consumers who are going abroad should consider taking travellers cheques away with them. This form of payment, Ms Harrison reported, is insured against theft or loss - and as such is 'one fear that can be neutralised whilst you enjoy the pool'. For those looking to go on the break of a lifetime, applying for a low-rate personal loan could prove to be helpful. Seeking out such financial assistance could see borrowers meet the cost of flights and accommodation quickly, leaving them with an affordable rate of repayment to make. However, a loan can also be advisable for those who are so worried about what will happen while they are gone that they never end up taking a break. In using such borrowing to supplement day-to-day spending Brits could find that they can manage the likes of credit card bills and utility bills with greater ease. This could prove to be of particular help after moneysupermarket revealed in an August study that 34 per cent of Britons are worried about how they will be able to afford to heat their homes during the winter.
