Understanding How Affiliate Marketing WorksBy Paul Fitzgerald What exactly is affiliate marketing? Affiliate marketing is a business enterprise which involves revenue sharing between an advertiser and a website owner. In this venture, web site owners are commonly referred to as affiliate marketers. Affiliate marketing involves placing the advertiser's ads in the form of a banner, a video, or text link in the affiliate marketer's website. To put it simply, through this, affiliate marketers help advertisers or merchants sell their products or services by directing potential customers to the merchant's website. In return, the merchant pays or gives the marketer a percentage or commission for sending the customer to his site. Oftentimes, affiliate marketers are not exactly required to promote the ads his website displays, however, if the marketer is intent on gaining substantial amount of profit, then actual though subtle promotion of the products or services which his website is advertising would be a great way to accomplish that. You see, an affiliate marketer can earn in three ways: through Pay Per Click (PPC), Pay Per Lead (PPL), Pay Per Action (PPA), and Pay Per Sale (PPS). With PPC, an affiliate marketer earns every time a potential customer clicks the ads on his website which brings the customer to the merchant's website. On the other hand, with PPL, an affiliate marketer earns every time a potential customer registers at the merchant's website. With PPA, an affiliate earns a commission every time a customer takes a specified action such as submit a form or a purchase in the merchant's website as a result of the ad placement. PPS is a variant of PPA wherein an affiliate earns every time a merchant makes a sale through the ad placed on his website. What makes affiliate marketing beneficial for both online merchant and affiliate marketer is that both earn profits. Moreover, the merchant's products or services are exposed to a broader market, in a global scale. Also, the click throughs brought in by the ads placed on the sites of affiliate marketers can eventually convert into sales. And since affiliate marketers are basically only paid with their commissions every time the ads on their site generate income for the merchant, then the merchant does not have to shell out much on this online ad campaign. However, if you are a merchant and worried about having to pay for the click throughs that do not convert into sales, you need not worry. There are good networks out there that have programs which can protect you from having to pay for fraudulent clicks. That is why, before using any programs or networks be sure to check the services that they provide.
