The Challenges of Moving With ChildrenBy Christine OKelly Finding the perfect apartment for rent can be a challenge in itself. A child often finds it difficult to understand why they have to move away from their old home and away from their friends. Locating a great apartment for rent and moving can be chaotic and stress filled. There are several steps that can be taken to make moving to your new apartment rental an easier experience. Prepare Your Children For The Move Depending on the age of the children, they are usually much more perceptive than we give them credit for. They are aware of what's going on around them and you if you're considering looking for an apartment to rent, it's important that you talk to them about it ahead of time. You of course will make the final decision as to which apartment for rent you accept, but bet them be part of the discussion and thinking so they don't feel left out of the process. Smaller children can make use of a time schedule so they know what to expect and when. When searching for an apartment to rent, ask your children for their opinion. If they accompany you on the apartment rental search, consider their thoughts. As the time to move approaches, give them some responsibilities so they become involved rather than just being a bystander. This can be something as simple as boxing up their toys or helping to clean up as you move items. Moving Day Is Here If you've planned properly, you didn't pack absolutely everything you've owned. Keep the items that you use on a daily basis out until the last minute. Think about letting your child pack a backpack with their most precious items so they will have them close at hand at all times. The day you actually move to your new apartment for rent, you have to decide what role the children will play. If children are very young, you might want to consider daycare for the moving day. This will let you focus on the task at hand and not have to worry about feeding and changing small children or worrying about their safety with moving heavy objects. Older children may be of assistance by helping to move the lighter boxes, especially if they are not marked 'fragile'. Settling In Your New Apartment Rental As you did before the move, include your children in the unpacking process. Talk to them about where to place their belongings and how they want their room to be decorated. The discussion will make them feel as if they are a valuable part of the process. It may be comforting to make their room appear as closely as possible to the old room Moving to a new apartment rental can be stressful and overwhelming for anyone, but especially for children. In the midst of all the confusion, a child may feel lonely or left out. Take a few minutes to sit and comfort them, play a game, or walk around your new neighborhood. Remember, it will be waiting for you when you return. You are under no specific deadline to unpack. Once the unpacking has taken place and you start to settle back into a regular routine, be sure to ask your children how things are going for them. Finding an apartment for rent and moving to a new apartment rental doesn't have to be stressful if you plan ahead and include your children in the entire moving process from start to finish.
