Care Packages are not Just for Small Items

By Phoenix Delray

Care packages often include things like food, toiletries, and photographs for the person who is away from home, but these little items dont have to be all that is included. There are many larger items that are frequently needed and appreciated that dont make it into many care packages, so here is a list of some of those things that should be included that many people often do not think about.

The first category of items for care packages is linens. Sheets and extra sets of sheets are always appreciated, as are mattress pads, bath towels, hand towels, lots of wash cloths, pillows and pillow cases, and blankets. To go along with linens include things like laundry baskets or collapsible hampers or bags, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and of course, plenty of change for the laundry machines.

If the person who is away from home has any personal needs, items to assist with maintaining those needs might be included as well. These kinds of items would include glasses, contacts, contact lens solution and care items, pain relievers, cold and flu medicines, and first aid items like alcohol swabs, q tips, band aids, and ace bandages.

There are a lot of miscellaneous items that people often are in need of when they are away from home that can be included in these packages as well. Things like poster adhesive, sticky tape, under bed storage containers, throw rugs, can openers, and utensils like forks, spoons, knives, plates, and bowls are always good additions. Other things that can also go into special care packages include trash cans and bags, a can opener, cleaner for the persons living space, paper towels, dish soap, and also extension cords are good things, too.

When it comes to the common essentials, often what are included are toiletries, personal care items, clothes, food, money, CDs or mp3 players, snacks, snacks, and more snacks, and office or school supplies like stamps, envelopes, pens, pencils, paper (lots of paper) books, and decks of playing cards are always welcomed when someone opens up their surprise. Photographs of things and people from home are great things to add as well. Even if there are pictures of the bathroom that was just remodeled, those pictures will help the person who is away from home by including them in the things that go on while they are away. The whole point of care packages is to let the person know that they are cared for and not forgotten about, and that person will never feel left out of home.
