Why Choose Roman Blinds?

By Thomas Pretty

Roman blinds or shades are increasingly being used in the world of interior design as an excellent way to bring elegance and style to windows. Roman blinds offer a simplistic, chic design option for decorators and are considered ideal in many different homes.

Typically this form of blind is a fabric rectangle that is raised and lowered in folds; the raising and lowering of the device is reliant upon cords and rings which are attached to the top of the window frame. If installed correctly the blinds can be fitted into the window frame so that they are unobtrusive with clean lines.

Some designers choose to line their roman blinds for a variety of reasons. Adding a lining will increase the insulation provided by the window covering whilst also increasing the light control functionality and the level of privacy.

Roman blinds are extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of rooms in the home. The fact that almost any fabric can be used in their construction means that this versatility is evident in both style and function.

Heavier fabrics will naturally suit bedrooms where light blockage is a major issue whereas lighter materials may be suited to relatively public rooms like the kitchen. They do not even have to be used on their own, when combined with curtains and drapes, rather interesting design images can be created.

Patterns and styles differ in relation to the materials being used; with so many different styles homeowners are given options ranging from minimalist block colours to more outlandish patterns and designs. In addition to colour and pattern however it is also possible to have different hem lines on roman blinds.

These hem lines range from simple curves to castellated patterns and the widely used envelope design. It does not stop there however, with the option to have tassels or eyelets it is easy to match the design of roman blinds to the decor already present in a home.

The Mediterranean feel brought by this form of blind is an excellent way to add warmth and style to a home. They act as a real alternative to curtains as they do not have the same disadvantages of regular blinds. For instance wooden and aluminium blinds, whilst extremely practical are rarely great insulators and if trying to achieve a warm feel in a home are simply not suitable.

In contrast roman blinds made of thicker fabrics give homeowners a practical, versatile window covering that offers much the same as regular blind varieties but with an addition of style and elegance.

No matter the style of your home or the room you are decorating roman blinds should be considered as a viable option for the window coverings. While it is possible to manufacture your own blinds with the myriad of helpful websites on the internet this is typically unadvisable.

Unless you are a seamstress with experience of sowing and stitching making your own blinds would prove difficult and could even be a disaster. Nobody wants amateur looking window coverings in their home and hence if going for that high spec look, professionally manufactured blinds are probably the best choice.

With such a wealth of window coverings on the market today it is possible to find one that matches the style of any home. If decorating it is strongly advisable to consider roman blinds as a valid alternative to curtains and regular blind varieties. As an interesting and elegant design option they are simply unrivalled.
