Do DVDs Make Good Christmas Presents Or Not?

By James Woolley

CDs were always the traditional Christmas present and stocking filler when you ran out of ideas for what to buy someone, but now DVDs are equally as popular. However that doesn't necessarily make them a boring present. In fact I think DVDs can be a great present to give someone.

The first reason why I think this is the case is simply because you can find DVDs covering almost any subject. So as well as the traditional movies and TV shows available on DVD, you can also find a huge range of DVDs covering the more niche subjects. For example, if you go on Amazon or one of the other large DVD retailers, you will see all kinds of DVDs covering subjects such as steam trains, fishing, gardening, mountaineering and so on. This means that you can buy an enjoyable and interesting DVD for someone regardless of what their particular interests are.

Of course for most people it's the TV and movie DVDs that are the most popular and these too make great gifts. If you're buying for a distant relative or a casual friend, for instance, then a single film DVD is a decent gift to give someone, but a DVD can also constitute a main present for close friends and relatives as well.

This is because with the proliferation of complete collections of TV shows on DVD, you can now spend a lot more money on a huge box set of their favourite program(s). I'm a big fan of these box sets myself and I always make sure I get at least a couple of these each Christmas. They really do make a great present because they can provide you with endless hours of entertainment, and are particularly useful in today's society when people don't really have the time to commit themselves to a long-running TV show that runs for several months.

DVDs are now extremely cheap compared to previous years, and prices seem to be falling all the time so now is a great time to snap up some bargains for Christmas. For instance I've seen the entire collection of Friends episodes available for around $75 recently which is about half of what it used to cost, and you should find that other titles are equally as cheap if you shop around.

Overall I think DVDs are a great present, particularly the complete box sets of TV shows, because they provide hours of entertainment and they can be watched over and over again of course. So don't think of DVDs as being a safe and unimaginative gift to give someone because I personally think that they make for great Christmas (and birthday) presents.
