Budgeting for A Road Trip

By Shawn Wilson

Now that things have been getting worse in the economic sector, people automatically assume that their holidays and vacations are gone with it. Not necessarily so. You can easily plan ahead and still manage to get in a really good vacation.

Take for example; budgeting every month, even putting away $20 to $40 per month can help contribute towards a little vacation at the end of the year of even at the end of 6 months.

Your long awaited and expensive Hawaiian vacation may have to wait but you can just as easily get in your car and enjoy a local road trip say a few hours away or a few days away with just a little planning.

The key to making your dollar stretch is staying local, within your state and if you can afford to get away for a few more days, within your country. Think of all the cities and towns that are within easy driving distance from your home that you have never given a second thought to that potentially can be a wonder to visit.

Make the best of your road trips and include all the family or perhaps you want it to be a little getaway with just you and your partner. Getting away from the kids if you can find a babysitter to look after them works wonders when things are financially tough and everyone is working harder and longer in order to stay ahead financially.

And there are lots of options when it comes to staying over night and eating. You can for instance camp out if the weather permits and you don't mind being in open air; use a camper (rent one for the weekend if you don't own one); stay at a bed and breakfast as they tend to be cheaper than a hotel; motels are more economical choices and better suited for car weary travelers. It also has the added benefit of having your vehicle close at hand when you want to get on the road quickly again. Many hotels offer different types of suites within different price ranges so there is a lot to choose from.

You can always sleep in your car but that is not recommended due to safety issues and it would be slightly uncomfortable making for a very cranky morning.

Eating can be whatever you like as well. You can easily pack a few sandwiches, snacks and drinks before you head out and pick up groceries along the way. You can easily get by doing this without ever having to dine in a restaurant.

Restaurants and diners along the highway tend to be the most convenient and the most economical. You can leave fancy restaurant dining as a special occasion function only or choose to have only one meal a day purchased at a sit down restaurant.

Either way, a road trip affords as many luxuries or money saving tips as you could wish for. You can adjust it to your time and price range that suits you best. Best of all is that it's on your time schedule; you can either choose to stay and extra day or an extra hour or two; decide on a whim that you want to take a hiking trail instead; or even decide on a completely different destination altogether.

There is nothing like having choices that you can control and change on a whim. A bit difficult to do with scheduled trains and airplanes, so go ahead and start mapping out your road trip today.
