Sharing A Room When You Travel

By Jim Brown

I have been travelling for a long time and it is one of my biggest hobbies. However, travelling with companions is fun but also creates lots of problems and even for some cases if you travel with your friends, after the trip you guys will never talk to each other. When you share a room with another while travelling, it does not matter you know them or not, you have to be well-prepared for those situation.

First of all it is sharing the room. If you can afford to pay for your own room, I would encourage you to do that. It is not the matter of privacy, but it will create lots of uncomfortable situations later. What if you snore loudly when you sleep? Can your friend stand this? Also, what if you don't even know that you snore when you sleep and you friend tells you that you snore very loudly. Will you accept this right away or will you just say you have never snored in your life. That little thing will be bigger if you both do not know to calm down and solve the problems. This is the case when you snore, how about your roommate if he or she snores? Will you be able to sleep with lots of loud sounds? I would not and I would not be able to sleep at all. Will you tell her or not? The best policy for this if you cannot afford your own room is that you should bring your earplugs that help you not to hear what you do not and bother you when you are sleeping.

Also, sharing a room creates other problems. Imagine after a long day of trekking, you want to go back to your room right away, and take a bath or a shower but you just have one but with two people. Who will be the first, and who will be the second. If you have a regulation, like you can do it first today, and I will be the first tomorrow, it would be no problem. However, you sometimes forget, and just walk in the bathroom, feel like your home and your bathroom is always your bathroom, that comes to problems. You roommate at first may find it annoying. However, if you do it twice, she or he may get angry. Some people tell you that they are angry, that is good because you know the reasons and some people do not because that is not their habits and they like to keep things to themselves. That might even make the situations more difficult.

One more thing of sharing a room with another companion is the time to sleep. Some people sleep very late and some go to bed early. So, you have to accommodate each other to find the best time for both. Each will have to sacrifice a bit to make it more comfortable. Probably you can split the time difference between the two to make it fairer, and then follow that schedule.
