A Brief Introduction to Microdermabrasion Treatments

By Michel Disusa

Micro-dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure and has been in use for quite some time for skin treatments. Micro-dermabrasion treatments are used for a variety of purposes such as treating wrinkled skin, damaged skin as well as treating stretch marks.

The process is non-chemical and non-invasive. It involves removing the outer layers of skin to get rid of dry or dead skin cell. This enables the body to create fresh skin over the underlying softer layers.

The Procedure

The procedure is simple. Small crystals of aluminium oxide are sprayed on the affected areas while, a suction removes those crystals along with the dead skin. The force of the suction and the spray can be varied in order to get optimum skin penetration on a variety of skin types. Once the top layer is removed, new skin grows over the lower layers replacing damaged skin with fresh skin.

The process of microdermabrasion may not be as effective for deep wrinkles and scars but multiple treatments can get the job done perfectly well. To get desired results for deep scars and wrinkles, you may need to undergo anywhere between 5 to 12 treatments over a period of 2 to 3 weeks.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks may occur due to a lot of reasons such as sudden weight gain, heavy workouts as well a pregnancy. Post pregnancy stretch marks may sometimes take years to disappear.

Multiple micro-dermabrasion treatments (sometimes over 12 treatments) are required to get rid of stretch. A normal session may last up to 30 to 45 minutes but in case of stretchech marks, the procedure may take as long as 2 hours.

Does It Really Help?

A number of people who've undergone stretch mark treatments through the process of microdermabrasion have come out of the clinics, pretty satisfied with the results. Let's understand the nature of stretch. Microdermabrasion can only treat the epidermis, i.e. the top layers of the skin whereas stretch marks occur both in the epidermis and the dermis, i.e. the middle layer of the skin.

Microdermabrasion wasn't really designed to treat stretch marks but multiple procedures may have a number of positive effects on your skin. It can heal the epidermal damage as well as catalyse the process of cell reformation in the middle layer of the skin.

The Final Verdict

If you have stretch marks on your body, you can significantly reduce their appearance by undergoing a number of microdermabrasion procedures. But truth has it that microdermabrasion treatment will not make your stretch marks disappear completely. If you are lucky then after a few treatments your dermis may automatically start recovering.

Microdermabrasion encourages the growth of fresh skin. If you want your stretch marks to fade, get in touch with your dermatologist to discuss the option of microdermabrasion.
